In this guide we tell you all about growing leeks. From planting details to harvesting, we’ll give you all the knowledge you need to grow these vegetables in your garden or vegetable garden. Leeks, with their mild flavor and versatility in the kitchen, are an excellent choice for any vegetable garden.

The leek, scientifically known as Allium ampeloprasum var. porrum , is a close relative of the onion and garlic. It is native to the Mediterranean and has been cultivated for centuries for its unique flavor and ability to grow in diverse climates.

WHEN AND HOW TO SOW LEEKS

Leeks grow well in well-drained, nutrient-rich soils. It is essential to prepare the soil properly for the success of your crop. For this we can provide in the phase of soil preparation or bedding, worm castings and some granular fertilizer such as Guano Fertilizer or Garden Fertilizer.

cultivation

For planting leek is done substantially in spring or autumn, although it is a versatile plant that in temperate climates can be grown all year round. We will look for a place with direct sunlight for optimal growth. Leeks require a long cultivation time, so choose well the site in which you are going to make the planting or transplanting.

IRRIGATION IN THELEEK CULTIVATION GUIDE

For optimal cultivation of leeks, a regular supply of water is necessary for healthy growth. We need to avoid waterlogging as much as possible, but make sure to keep the soil moist.

As an advice we would tell you to water the leeks thoroughly but moderately. Lack of water can lead to smaller leeks and less intense flavor.

HOW AND WHEN TO HARVEST LEEKS

Leeks are ready for harvest when they reach a suitable size, usually about 2-3 centimeters in diameter. The technique of “aporcado” helps to make the stems whiter and more tender. This way, more of the edible part of the leek is used.
