Spinach Growing Guide

Por Toni Busquets
December 5, 2022

In the spinach growing guide we are going to give you some tips for the cultivation of this plant. This vegetable belongs to the chenopodiaceae family, like chard and beets. It is one of the vegetables with the highest content of vitamins and antioxidants and also helps prevent cardiovascular diseases, reduces excess cholesterol and is good for the bones due to the proportion of calcium and phosphorus it contains.

As for its cultivation, spinach is a very simple leafy crop. It does not need a lot of space and is suitable for people who do not have a lot of hand in the garden, being one of the simplest crops that we can have in the garden.

WHEN AND HOW SPINACH IS SOWN

Spinach can be grown all year round, as there are both Autumn-Winter and Spring-Summer varieties. The latter are less prone to spike in the heat.

The sowing of spinach is very simple, we can do it both in seedbed and direct sowing. The ideal is to moisten the substrate or soil before sowing and once we have this, put the seeds. If we do it in seedbed, the ideal is to put 2 or 3 per alveolus, so we make sure that some germinate.

If we do it with direct seeding, we should leave about 20-30 centimeters between rows. And throw the seed in a small furrow that we make. Then we cover and moisten again. If we see that we have many germinated seeds we can make a thinning a few weeks after germination.

IRRIGATION IN THE SPINACH CULTIVATION GUIDE

Spinach likes short and frequent waterings, just enough to keep the substrate or soil moist. If we are in the rainy season, while the rain lasts and the soil is humid, we should eliminate irrigation.

HOW AND WHEN TO HARVEST SPINACH

Approximately 5-6 weeks after germination we can start harvesting. We can do it in two ways, one harvesting from the outer leaves towards the center, always being very careful not to remove the central eye of the spinach. In this way we can harvest fresh leaves for a longer period of time and consume them as and when we feel like it.

And cutting from the root, that is to say, making a cut in the neck at ground level. In this way we will not be able to make more harvests of that plant.
